“The tricky part of pain medicine is understanding where the pain is coming from. It’s like solving a puzzle.”

Dr. Sallowm’s path to pain medicine began in neurology. “Pain management included all the things I found interesting in neurology,” he says. Taking physical exams, reading imaging tests like MRIs, and detailing a patient’s history are important parts of both neurology and pain management. But pain management offered hands-on, procedural treatments, such as nerve blocks, ablations, and steroid injections, that Dr. Sallowm wanted to add to his problem-solving neurology skills.

Approach
Dr. Sallowm’s residency involved mentoring from more than 20 neurologists in a large health system, and the diversity of approaches helped him develop his skills. “I took a little of each mentor’s experience and approach and then mixed it with my own, expanding my problem-solving abilities,” he says.
The multidisciplinary approach to pain management at Synovation interested Dr. Sallowm. “Some clinics only focus on procedures, such as injections or physical therapy,” he says. “But Synovation incorporates treatments for the psychological aspects of pain, such as anxiety or depression. Chronic pain, anxiety, and depression are closely related as anxiety and depression can affect our perception of chronic pain, either directly or indirectly.”

Credentials
Dr. Sallowm earned his medical degree in Syria and completed his Neurology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan. Following his residency, Dr. Sallowm completed an ACGME Pain Medicine Fellowship at Henry Ford Health. He was selected as the Neurology Chief Resident for the 2019-2020 academic year and received the Wayne State School of Medicine Resident teaching award. Dr. Sallowm has published several peer-reviewed journal articles in publications such as The Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery and Interventional Neurology Journal.

Personal
In his free time, Dr. Sallowm enjoys watching Formula 1 racing for its adventure, thrill, and the drivers’ delicate balance of quick steering and precise wheel control. Basketball and football are also fun sports to watch, but he can be tempted to watch a rerun of “Friends”.
